Whenever I’m tired or in a funk, I reach for citrus; grapefruit happens to be one of the best mood-boosting oils there is. Its sweet, refreshing scent has a pleasant tangy note, perfect for creating a cheerful atmosphere in your home or office while helping to purify the air, as well as to contribute antibacterial action to cleaning solutions. Besides its marvelous psychological benefits, grapefruit is an excellent remedy for water retention. And those watching their waistlines enjoy its ability to take the mind off bothersome food cravings.

Precautions
Do not use if you take statins or other medications that interact with grapefruit. Grapefruit is phototoxic and can increase the likelihood of sunburn. Do not expose treated areas to direct sunlight for 12 hours after use.

Application Methods

INHALATION: Added to an essential oil inhaler or aromatherapy pendant, 3 or 4 drops of grapefruit essential oil can help you stay focused when working or studying. If adding it to a diffuser, use the number of drops recommended by the diffuser’s manufacturer.
TOPICAL: Combine 4 drops of grapefruit essential oil with 1 teaspoon of your favorite carrier oil for a quick, detoxifying massage.
BATH: If you’re looking for an uplifting, energizing addition to your bath and body care lineup, create blends that include grapefruit. It’s fantastic in everything from basic bath salts to invigorating sugar scrubs.

Popular Uses
Like other citrus oils, grapefruit is good for eliminating odors and sanitizing surfaces. Mix it into household cleansers with complementary essential oils for fresher bathrooms, kitchens, and more. For swollen feet and legs, create a massage blend with 6 drops of grapefruit essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil. Use it as often as you’d like to support circulation and help reduce water retention. Grapefruit offers good antimicrobial properties, and is an effective addition to first-aid remedies for minor wounds.
